  1. 1924- . Zambian politician. Imprisoned in
  2. 1958-60 as founder of the Zambia African
  3. National Congress, he became in 1964 first
  4. prime minister of Northern Rhodesia, then
  5. first president of Zambia. In 1973 he
  6. introduced one-party rule. He supported the
  7. nationalist movement in Southern Rhodesia,
  8. now Zimbabwe, and survived a coup attempt
  9. 1980 thought to have been promoted by South
  10. Africa. He was elected chair of the
  11. Organization of African Unity 1987. In 1990
  12. his popularity fell and he was faced with
  13. wide anti-government demonstrations.
